A huge day for the CBJ. See what happens will you actually have people who are qualified and know how to run a team? It is no surprise to me Mason and Brassard are gone. I hate to give myself a Barry Horowitz or a DDP self hi five but who has been telling you for years about those two? It actually wasn’t hard. Anyone outside Scott Howson and a few superfans knew these two were turds. I actually don’t blame them. I blame Howson. What GM in the league would give a player to a 4 year 12.8 million dollar deal after 31 games? The Mason deal is debatable as well. Both players were extended before they had to. Look how Washington handled Backstrom. They could have given him a big deal after scoring 88 points but waited one more year and played the process out then gave him a payday. Backstrom a smart move. Mason and 16 bad.
Trading Mason is a win win. He never would admit he let in any goal. It was always someone elses fault. He showed up fat to camp after his rookie year and really didn’t look in shape until this season. He was the worst goalie in the league the last 3 years and Howson continued to ignore he was the problem. There isn’t an organization in the NFL that would have a QB who led the league in INT’s and continue to start year after year. I was told by someone in the organization after last season that the team was moving on from Mason and he actually had a chance to start in camp. Man I am glad Howson is gone.
The big one is 16, Dorsett and Moore for Gaborik. I will miss Dorsett the guy is total heart. He has a lack of talent but yet gives more than any guy on that team. Sure there are plenty of guys like that in the NHL but the Jackets have not seen many. Much respect to Dorsett. The fans in NY will love him. 16 was a huge disappointment. Has been given everything and every opportunity even after quitting twice. He would play on the top line and get 20 plus minutes a game. Despite flashes and some talent he never showed the intangibles to be that top line talent. I will
not miss him and very happy he is gone. The Ranger fans won’t dislike him because he will not be leaned on like he was here. He might even score 50 points at some point. Just not here. Moore is a decent player and Howsons best draft pick. He has upside and will probably fit in well in NY but to get you have to give and he won’t be a top pair guy.
Gaborik has sick skill. You will say WOW watching this guy. The poor guy has played for two coaches. Jacques Lemaires and John Tortorella . I love both guys. I remember talking on the phone to Torts after he got screwed by Bobby Smith in Phoenix. His honesty was highly entertaining. He is a straight up honest dude who wants you to bring it. Gaborik isn’t the first player these guys didn’t like. He has played in different systems and I think he will fit in well here. The guy is a huge star. The Rangers have struggled and Gaborik hasn’t played his best. He was also was a scapegoat in a big media market. I am not saying he hasn’t deserved to be ripped but the positives out way the negatives big time and I am not worried about getting effort from Gaborik. Richards has been a master at getting the most from his guys. I trust he will continue that trend. Gaborik is impact
Blake Comeau was a decent pick up for what they gave up. Not a bad little deal.
So for the first time in 6 years I will watch this team without any frustration. I have said for years it starts from the top in hockey and the Jackets proved that today. Keep H and R block away from hockey and let JD and my new best friend Jarmo run the show because this team can make the playoffs. It will be up to them but I like their chances. The added part of today is this team is still set for the future with 3 1st round draft picks. The future is bright. JD and Jarko light/Howson darkness.
The Penguins and Wild did well during the deadline. Both fan bases should be happy. Back on the air for Wilks broadcasting soon peeps.
Be sure to come see me at the Crew game this Saturday. I have a tailgate set up at Corner of Lamar Hunt Way and Black & Gold Blvd in the Southwest corner of the B Lot.
